We serve the well-water suburbs west and northwest of Chicago. We don't sell softeners to towns on Lake Michigan water — at roughly 8 grains, most of those homes don't need one, and we'll tell you so.
Chicago and the inner suburbs draw treated Lake Michigan water, which runs about 8 grains per gallon. Most of the collar-county suburbs pump from deep or shallow wells in limestone and dolomite aquifers, which dissolve calcium and magnesium into the water. That's why a town twenty minutes from the lake can measure three times harder.
Not with hardness. Those are carbon filters — carbon captures chlorine, taste and odor. Calcium and magnesium are dissolved ions and pass straight through. Your pitcher water measures exactly as hard as your tap water; it just tastes better.
They do something real, but read what it is. They change the shape of the mineral so it's less likely to stick to surfaces. They don't remove it. Test afterward and the water still reads the same hardness, and soap still won't lather. Only ion exchange removes hardness.
